This article is for people who train. Or a concerned parent or girlfriend who wants to check on their son or partner. Not necessarily elite athletes.
People who might do Hyrox, go running on weekends, lift weights after work, train for a marathon, or simply try to stay healthier than they were last year.
Because at some point you've probably heard:
"I got electrolytes."
And then you did some research and found out:
"They're just overpriced salt."
So what's actually going on, and why are they so popular?
At Jade Peak, there are two founders. One sweats a lot, and the other has the opposite problem and barely sweats at all.
The Electrolyte Boom
A few years ago, electrolytes were mostly associated with marathon runners, triathletes, and people recovering from food poisoning. Depending on who you are, that might sound insane.
Today they're everywhere, especially on social media. You can buy electrolyte powders, tablets, concentrates, sports drinks, and even snack products marketed around hydration. Hydration is a huge part of wellness, and at the end of the day, wellness has become an industry.
At Jade Peak, we started noticing the same thing we saw happen with protein a few years ago.
Some sporty people can genuinely benefit from this, and we can't deny it. But others are simply buying expensive stuff.
First Things First: What Are Electrolytes?
Forget the complicated explanations. We're not doctors here. Electrolytes are minerals that help your body function properly.
Some of them are:
Sodium
Potassium
Magnesium
Calcium
Without them, your muscles, nerves, and hydration systems don't work correctly. Now the real question is: Do you really need extra amounts of them?
The Part Nobody Likes Hearing
No one wants to hear this because the bright red drink that hydrates you tastes amazing, and it feels like a reward. Okay, but that's not the point...
For most healthy people? Probably not.
If you're eating fruit, vegetables, protein, nuts, dairy, and drinking enough water, you're already getting most of what you need.
This is where a lot of the marketing starts becoming questionable.
A surprising amount of electrolyte products are essentially sodium with fancy branding.
Or, as one Reddit user put it:
"The expensive version and the cheap version are often separated more by marketing than by science."
Harsh.
But not entirely wrong.

When Electrolytes Actually Matter
Who is the chosen one to drink them and benefit from them?
Well, one co-founder here definitely is.
The evidence is quite clear that people who lose large amounts of fluid can benefit from replacing electrolytes.
Examples:
Long endurance events
Marathon training
Hyrox competitions
Long hikes in hot weather
Multiple training sessions per day
Heavy sweaters
If your training shirt dries with white salt marks on it, that's often a sign you're losing significant sodium through sweat.
In those situations, replacing electrolytes makes sense.
The Study Everyone Misunderstands
One of the reasons this topic gets confusing is because both sides are partially right.
For a normal gym session or a short run, water is usually enough.
That doesn't mean electrolytes are useless.
Saying nobody needs electrolytes because you don't need them for a 5 km run is like saying nobody needs a winter jacket because it's summer.
The Real Benefit We Keep Hearing About
Again and again, we hear similar stories from normal people.
People who started paying attention to hydration and suddenly noticed:
Fewer headaches
Less afternoon brain fog
Better recovery
Improved training consistency
Were electrolytes solely responsible? mmmm Probably not. It's more likely that they simply started drinking more water.
So... Are They Worth It?
Our conclusion is simple.
If you're training hard, sweating heavily, spending hours outdoors, or preparing for endurance events, electrolytes are probably worth understanding.
But please check the ingredients and look for products that actually contain the proper minerals.
If you're sitting at a desk all day and already eating a balanced diet, even if you have a gym session, they're probably not the miracle product some advertisements would like you to believe.
So we sit somewhere in the middle here at Jade Peak.
This is not a sponsored piece, just something we explored out of genuine interest.
