Jade Peak writes about places, experiences, and the people behind them, so hotels, operators, and companies come up often. We have no financial relationship with any entity named in this article. If that ever changes, we'll say so plainly, right here at the top.
Watching the sunrise from a hot air balloon over Teotihuacán is one of the most memorable experiences you can have near Mexico City. At Jade Peak, we've noticed it's consistently one of the most popular experiences on both Viator and Airbnb Experiences, and after doing it ourselves, it's easy to see why. But before setting that early alarm, there are a few things worth knowing.
Bring a warm jacket.
Even on warm days, the early morning air is surprisingly cold while you wait for takeoff and during the flight.
Where to stay
If you're choosing where to stay in Mexico City, we'd recommend Roma the night before. It's usually one of the last pickup points before leaving the city, meaning you can sleep a little longer. Staying in Condesa often means being collected much earlier.
Don't worry about coffee or bathroom breaks. The operators have the entire morning planned out, so everything runs smoothly from pickup to takeoff.
Reality
Your balloon may not fly directly over the pyramids. The route depends entirely on the wind, something no operator can control. Every flight is different.
Don’t be nervous
If you're nervous about flying, don't be. A hot air balloon is much calmer than most people imagine. There are no sharp turns or sudden drops, only the feeling of gently floating through the sky.
What we loved most at Jade Peak was seeing Teotihuacán from above and watching dozens of colorful balloons rise together at sunrise. The views open in every direction, and the flight stays calm. We were also impressed by how friendly and professional the crew was throughout the morning.
Photos and videos
Finally, we'd recommend adding the professional photo and video package. The footage captured from both the ground and the air is something your phone can't recreate.
Our recommendation
Make the hot air balloon your only plan for the morning. We booked our flight with Viaja Teotihuacán through Airbnb Experiences, and the entire experience from pickup to landing was exceptionally well organized and professional.
Many operators offer extra activities after the flight, but we'd recommend keeping it simple. After waking up before dawn, you've already packed a full day's worth of adventure into a few hours. Rather than trying to fit in more sightseeing, head back to Roma or Condesa for a long brunch, enjoy a well-earned siesta, and save your energy for exploring Mexico City later in the afternoon. That pacing let us enjoy both the balloon experience and the city.
